Charleston was treated to a spectacular Broadway-caliber performance Thursday, January 12, 2023. Fela! The Concert was held at the Gaillard auditorium and featured performers from the original Broadway show. Born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, Fela Kuti is one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. The Nigerian was the pioneer of Afrobeat, and has inspired artists such as Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Nas, and Missy Elliot.

The show was electric. Stirred by the rhythmic music of the band whose members include Greg Gonzalez, Nadav Nirenberg, Talu Green, Domenica Fossati, Alex Harding, Morgan Price, Jeff Pierce, Ricardo Quinones, Bryan Vargas, Timothy Allen, the show’s headliner played by Duain Richmond, entranced the audience. With the help of fellow performers Afi Bijou, Shakira Marshall, Iris Wilson, Jason Herbert, and Ismael Kouyate, he brought them to their feet and set the stage on fire! When you combine the beat of the drum, the voices of the singers, and the sound from the band, you get an amazing synergy called Yanch! Yanch is what you experience when Water Make No Enemy comes on. Yanch is what you feel when you hear Zombie. Yanch is the attitude have when players sing, Expensive Shit!

This colorful show was electric, engaging, interactive, and above all impressive. A tragedy for those that missed it. You can find more information about Fela! The Concert by following @felaconcert on Instagram.
